SUMMARY:Wildfire Fuel: How Destructive Forest Pests Travel in Firewood
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will explore the significant threat that invasive forest pests\, specifically the Goldspotted Oak Borer (Agrilus auroguttatus or GSOB)\, pose to forest health in Southern California. We will discuss the devastating impact of GSOB on native oak populations\, how its infestation increases wildfire risk\, and how the pest’s spread is accelerated by the unregulated movement of firewood. Drawing from the work of the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians\, this talk will cover current management strategies by addressing the need for heat treatment standards\, industry collaboration\, and effective regulations. Ultimately\, it will emphasize the crucial role the public plays in protecting our shared natural and cultural resources. \n\n\n\nPresentation by: Joelene Tamm\, Natural Resources Director for the LA Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will be recorded\, and the link will be posted here once it is complete. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Beyond Wooden Thinking: Getting to the Heartwood of the Matter
DESCRIPTION:Recreational firewood movement is a major pathway for the spread of invasive forest pests. Both human behavior and firewood characteristics can influence pest transport. Dr. Riggins will discuss the new study titled “Burning questions: how human behaviors and firewood characteristics influence the transport of wood-boring insects” whereby campers were surveyed at MS state parks and firewood was collected for inspection. \n\n\n\nPresentation by: John Riggins\, Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in Forest Health at Oregon State University \n\n\n\nThis presentation will be recorded\, and the link will be posted here once it is complete. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Removal at Quogue Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Join Weed Warrior Leader Danna McCormick and QWR Staff for this invasive plant removal event. Invasive plants are a major threat to our forests\, and stopping their spread helps allow native plants to thrive in the understory. Please dress for the work and weather. It’s recommended to wear sturdy boots or sneakers and long layers\, including long pants and long sleeves – this ensures safety and reduces likelihood of exposure to nuisances like ticks and poison ivy. Bring your own water and snacks if desired. Some gloves\, pruners\, loppers and weeders are available to borrow\, but please bring your own if you have them. Community service hours available upon request. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Emerging Invasive Species Volunteer Day at Coindre Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join our Community Science Long Island July Volunteer Event! \n\n\n\n(Rain Date: July 19th\, 2025) \n\n\n\nJoin us for a nature walk at beautiful Coindre Hall Park and help us look out for invasive species! The event will kick off with a walk led by expert naturalists who will share information about the park\, some of the invasive species found there\, and how everyone can help manage invasives to protect these habitats just while going out for a stroll. During the walk\, we’ll point out some species along the way\, so we recommend having the Survey123 app on your phone and coming to the webinar on July 9 to get set up! After the walk\, we will conduct an invasive species pull where attendees are invited to help us remove invasive plants from the park and practice reporting species on Survey123. \n\n\n\n**Please remember to bring plenty of water\, tick repellent\, and clothes appropriate for the weather. ** \n\n\n\nDate: July 12 from 10AM-11:30AM (rain date: July 19) \n\n\n\nLocation: Coindre Hall Park in Huntington\, NY \n\n\n\n Don’t miss out\, register now! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here
