SUMMARY:Developing a Recipe for Success: Can Public Harvest Control Invasive Species? Webinar
DESCRIPTION:From nutria to lionfish\, natural resource managers and culinary artists have speculated that harvest and use of invasive species could provide a means of managing or even eliminating nuisance populations. Through multiple reviews of the scientific and popular literature\, we have concluded that\, if used properly\, incentivizing and encouraging public or commercial harvest could represent an opportunity to support management goals while simultaneously boosting economic development and environmental awareness. However\, if used incorrectly\, negative consequences such as generation of perverse incentives to further spread invaders can occur. In this talk\, our presenters will highlight principles they believe can help promote success and minimize risks of harvest-based invasive species management approaches. They’ll review the biological\, ecological\, human health\, and socioeconomic factors involved in invasive species incentives. They will also offer recommendations to assist in successful\, delicious\, and fashionable implementation of a successful harvest program.

SUMMARY:Firewood and the Forest Pest Multiverse: the influence of time on perceptions of regulation and detection
DESCRIPTION:The ease of detection of new geographically distinct infestations of forest pests and pathogens is highly dependent on several factors: damage patterns to trees\, existence and use of effective lures\, and visual distinctiveness of the pest itself. The resulting variable lags in time between establishment of a new pest population versus detection of that pest population can drive flawed perceptions of the history of regulatory action and effectiveness. This webinar will explore how time lags in detection can create missed opportunities for effective public outreach and regulatory engagement\, and how openly tackling these time lags as part of the conversation can help better protect trees around the USA—and the world. \n\n\n\nPresentation by: Leigh Greenwood\, Forest Pest and Pathogen Program Director\, The Nature Conservancy

SUMMARY:Webinar: Building Capacity for Rapid Response: Interjurisdictional Invasive Species Rapid Response Team (IInSRRT)
DESCRIPTION:The Interjurisdictional Invasive Species Rapid Response Team (IInSRRT) is a program being designed to support or lead\, as requested\, rapid response actions across jurisdictions in support of lead management authorities\, such as DOI land management agencies\, states\, tribes\, and territories. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the IInSRRT is to respond to nationally significant invasive species\, as appropriate to the DOI mission\, and across multiple jurisdictions regardless of land ownership within the authorities of DOI bureaus. The program structure is composed of the IInSRRT Coordinator\, an IInSRRT Guidance Group\, and deployment team responders initially composed of employees within the DOI. The Guidance Group provides guidance and support for the program. The IInSRRT Coordinator has been assisting in achieving management objectives flowing from the  National Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) Framework and other local\, regional\, and national efforts. The IInSRRT program is meant to increase resources available to support rapid response actions\, through Incident Command System (ICS) emergency response support that may include an interjurisdictional deployment team for invasive species incident response on and off DOI lands and waters as requested. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will provide an overview of the IInSRRT structure\, roles the program can support during response actions\, and provide one of many opportunities for suggestions on how to effectively implement the program

SUMMARY:Considering the Impacts of Scale to Wildlife in Prescribed Fire Planning
DESCRIPTION:It is widely recognized that many or most of our fire-dependent landscapes and species are suffering from a fire deficit. In an effort to increase area treated by fire\, a common strategy is to conduct larger\, often landscape-scale broadcast burns. Larger burns can also reduce financial costs. However\, the ecological impacts on wildlife may not be equal or beneficial across treatment scales; for example\, specialist species and those with restricted ranges could be disproportionately impacted. \n\n\n\nIn this Fueling Collaboration panel discussion\, we will explore the trade-offs in the role of scale in prescribed fires. Our panelists will present their experiences and discuss research around fire effects on various taxa and operational considerations. We will explore strategies for increasing area burned without negatively impacting unique systems or at-risk species.
