Water Chestnut Pull at Wantagh Mill Pond

Each summer NYSDEC staff, Nassau County Public Works, LIISMA (Long Island
Invasive Species Management Area), and volunteers work to remove invasive water
chestnut from Long Island lakes and ponds. Last year, over 100 bags of water chestnut
(approx. 3,000 lbs.) were removed from Wantagh Mill Pond, and Massapequa
Reservoir.
Who: Anyone is welcome to volunteer. You need to bring your own kayak or canoe,
life jacket, bucket and gloves.
What: Hand removal of water chestnut from a canoe, kayak, or from shore.
When: Thursday, June 11, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Rain date June 14.
Where: Wantagh Mill Pond, Merrick Road.
If you are interested in volunteering, you must pre-register, call (631) 444-0280 to sign
up, or send an email with your name and contact information to fwfish1@dec.ny.gov.
Volunteers also should bring drinking water, sun protection, and face covering. Social
distancing will be required.
