LI Metro Aquatic Invasive Species Spotlight: Save The Great South Bay

Written by Robin Silvestri

This summer, Save The Great South Bay launched its Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Watercraft Inspection Program to help prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species throughout the Great South Bay and its tributaries. Watercraft Inspector Dan Spanbauer has been conducting voluntary inspections at key boating access points, engaging directly with boaters while checking watercraft and equipment for aquatic plants and other organisms that may be transported between waterways. The program also provides an important opportunity to educate the boating community about simple steps they can take to help protect Long Island’s waters.

Dan Spanbauer, Save The Great South Bay Watercraft Inspector, conducts voluntary AIS inspections and educates boaters about preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species.

So far, inspections have not identified any major invasive species being transported out of the water—an encouraging start to the program. The team is continuing regular monitoring throughout the summer, with the inspection season running through Labor Day. In addition to helping prevent the spread of AIS, the program is providing valuable on-the-ground observations about what is present at local boating access sites and building awareness among boaters about their role in keeping the Great South Bay healthy.
