Congratulations to the winning students of the NYISAW “Most Wanted” Invasive Species Poster Contest!
One hundred and nineteen posters were received and each one impressed LIISMA staff. Thanks to all students who sent in posters! And special thanks to the teachers who included invasive species in their lesson plans this year. We hope this contest encouraged children, parents and teachers to learn about invasive species and the effects they have on Long Island’s environment, agriculture, and recreation.
Contest winners were announced during NYISAW (New York Invasive Species Awareness Week), June 6 to June 12. The mission of the New York Invasive Species Awareness Week (NYISAW) is to promote knowledge and understanding of invasive species and the harm they can cause. We want to empower YOU to stop the spread of invasive species!
About the Contest
In March 2022, the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA) PRISM invited all K to 12th grade students in the LIISMA Region to participate in the New York Invasive Species Awareness Week Poster Contest to showcase their creativity & express their thoughts on conservation & invasive species impacting our area.
Invasive species are non-native plants or animals whose introduction harms the environment, the economy, or human health. The “crimes” of invasive species can include outcompeting native animals & plants, harming human health, damaging agricultural production, & impeding outdoor recreation.
Thanks to the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets for sponsoring the prizes for the 2022 Most Wanted Invasive Species Poster Contest.
